Here Is What You Need to Know
Saturday 1 August, from 09h00, at Johnson’s Post.
If you have driven the N2 between Vleesbaai and Gouritsmond, you have probably seen the turnoff. This Saturday there is a proper reason to take it.
What is coming off the fire
The lamb ribs go on early and the roosterkoek comes off the coals all morning. There is a game meat dish for anyone who wants something a little different, plus meat, chicken and boerewors from local producers.
What is coming out of the oven
Our bakers have been busy. Expect sourdough breads and sourdough products, vetkoek, pies, pancakes and jaffels. On the sweet side there are koeksisters, lemon meringue, cakes and homemade treats, and the rusks that go so well with a cup of our coffee.
For the pantry and the table
German cold meats, cheese, curried fish and homemade preserves and sweets. Bring a bag, because most people arrive planning to buy one thing and leave with the week’s shopping.
There are fresh cut flowers too, along with clothing and handmade leatherwork from local craftspeople.
Why people keep coming back
A market like this is not really about the shopping list. It is about the stallholders who made what they are selling, the neighbours you bump into at the coffee counter, and a morning that slows down a bit.
Everything on the tables comes from people who live and work in this part of the Southern Cape. When you buy a loaf here, you are buying it from the person who baked it that morning.
Getting here
Johnson’s Post sits just off the N2, between Vleesbaai and Gouritsmond. It is an easy stop on the way to the coast, and an easy outing on its own.
The market starts at 09h00. Come early if there is something specific you have your eye on, because the popular stalls sell out.
Bring the family. Bring a friend. Make a morning of it.
See you Saturday.
